I know it is not politically incorrect to use the word “man” or “men” vs. “people” etc, but I am thinking this morning about the significance of men in the Bible. This is not to say women are not significant, for that is crazy thinking, but there is no doubt men play a huge part in the both the Old and New Testaments. There obviously is something uniquely special about men from God’s point of view, just as there is about women.
There used to be a great old hymn, “Rise Up Oh Men of God” that reflected the need for men to rise up and assume their God given responsibilities within the church. That hymn is not sung much anymore due to it being viewed as “sexist” or demeaning to women. Oh dear, why must we be so hung up on such things.
Please look at these lyrics to this song and see if there is really anything wrong with them:
. Rise up, O men of God!
Have done with lesser things.
Give heart and mind and soul and strength
to serve the King of kings.
2. Rise up, O men of God!
The kingdom tarries long.
Bring in the day of brotherhood
and end the night of wrong.
3. Rise up, O men of God!
The church for you doth wait,
her strength unequal to her task;
rise up, and make her great!
4. Lift high the cross of Christ!
Tread where his feet have trod.
As brothers of the Son of Man,
rise up, O men of God!
Is there really anything wrong with exhorting men to give their heart and mind and soul and strength to serve the King of Kings? Is there anything wrong with urging the brotherhood of men? Is there anything wrong with challenging men to rise up to make the church great? Is there anything wrong with laying before men the goal of treading where Christ’s feet trod?
At the time this hymn was written, men were the ones who served as pastors and teachers within the Body of Christ. Of course now days there are countless women who do the same thing and even lead ministries. Why can’t we simply realize that for thousands of years, the word “man” was synonymous with “people”. Some things in our modern society just drive me up a wall.
God needs all of us, men and women, to rise up and make His church great. Specifically God needs men to quit copping out on their duties and be who God intended them to be, which is the head of the family and the spiritual rock within the family no matter how bad things get. Rise up oh men and women of God for our families and the church needs us.
